Owned by the Ngugi family, Githaka Estate is covered in 67 ha of coffee trees producing over 600 MT of cherries annually. A local name meaning ‘forest’, Githaka has been family owned since 1966 and is currently run by second generation Ngugis.
The farm is technically located in Murang’a County, one of the five counties in the central region of the Republic of Kenya that’s thought to be the birthplace of the Kikuyu community, but is commonly considered to be located in Thika, a major commerce hub in Kiambu.
Coffee here is grown in deep, red volcanic soils rich in organic matter and benefits from a good amount of rainfall in the summer. Harvest season falls later in the year, with minimal crop harvested early between April and July. Once the grower’s buckets are filled with ripened cherry, the harvest is taken to the mill for wet processing using dam water fed from the Chania river. Coffee from Githaka is a classically fruit-forward Kenyan, offering notes of lychee, cherry, melon, and vanilla.
