San Martin Jilotepeque is located in the state of Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Translated from Nahuatl (the language of Central Mexico). Jiltepeque means "the hill of corn cobs". Corn or maize was a sacred crop to the Mayans, and this is reflected in the centuries of history of agriculture and trade that makes up the majority of the local economy.
Coffee was introduced to the region over two hundred years ago, and has thrived since due to the temperate climate, fertile volcanic soils and even rainfall of between 1500 - 2000mm per year. Coffee from this region is known as Guatemala Antigua - named after the neighbouring district - and is known internationally as some of the highest quality coffee from Guatemala, due to the unique fullness of body and flavours produced by the mineral rich soils.
The most successful varietals grown in the region are Bourbon and Typica, with harvest usually taking place between January and April. Chimaltenango is one of Guatemala's largest agricultural municipalities, benefiting from national land reform a period in the early 50's. Coffee is integral to the local economy and community, and you can taste the result of centuries of dedication and care.

Note: We have developed an espresso profile for this coffee - meaning it is roasted a little darker than would normally suit filter brew methods. If you're using pour over, Aeropress, batch brew, plunger or other filter brew methods we recommend our Single Origin Filter Roast. However, we're more than happy to supply any of our coffees ground to any specifications - coffee is a personal journey, and we are excited to take that journey with you.
