FRENCH PRESS BREW GUIDE V.1
The faithful plunger. Understated and under-rated. You probably already have one at home, but never knew what to do with it. It produces a sweet, rich cup similar to an Aeropress, and can use espresso or filter roasts – enjoyed black or with milk (in case you’re having morning tea with Nan).
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Plunger
- 20g of coarsely ground coffee
- 350mL water and a kettle
- A vessel (mug or carafe) for your brew
STEP 1: RINSE
Pour some water into the plunger to preheat it. Heat water to 92c, or roughly 60 seconds off the boil.
STEP 2: ADD COFFEE
Coarsely grind 20g of coffee, empty the pre-heated plunger, and place the coffee in the bottom.
STEP 3: BLOOM
Pour about 50g of water into the plunger to ‘bloom’. Agitate lightly to ensure the coffee is evenly saturated.
STEP 4: POUR
After 30 seconds or so, Pour the remaining 300g of water into the plunger. Stir the crust that forms on top and place the piston lid on top.
STEP 5: PLUNGE
Let the coffee brew for a total of 4 minutes (including the bloom). Lightly push the plunger piston down with even force to press the grounds to the base.
WAIT AND ENJOY
Decant into your favourite cup or mug and let it cool to a delicious drinking temperature.
